AP Mitchell Building Services Ltd has secured a £1.1 million contract to deliver a major electrical infrastructure upgrade at Liverpool John Moores University’s Mount Pleasant Campus. The project forms a critical part of LJMU’s decarbonisation strategy and supports the future deployment of electric heat pump systems across the campus.
The works will involves replacing aging low-voltage (LV) distribution systems and installing a new high-voltage (HV) infrastructure. Key elements include construction of a new SPEN 11kV substation and an adjacent LJMU HV Switch Room, installation of a new 11kV intake panel, transformer (ALDR-TX0001), and Mains Distribution Panel (ALD-MP-001) within the Aldham Robarts Lower Ground Floor Switch Room.
The project also includes new cable routes, earthing systems, containment, lighting, fire alarms, and data services. AP Mitchell will manage detailed phasing and sequencing to maintain continuous university operations. Shutdowns will be planned during off-peak periods and coordinated closely with LJMU.
AP Mitchell is responsible for finalising RIBA Stage 4 and 5 designs, testing, commissioning, and full handover documentation. The new system will offer 25% future load growth capacity and improved resilience.
This strategic project enables future electrification and ensures the campus is ready for sustainable energy demands.
